Assignment 5
Feb 4 2007, 10:36 PM EST
1. Great teachers focus on positive expectations and make them very clear from the beginning. The example in the book listed Respect yourself, Respect others, and Respect your school. These are general enough to encompass every aspect of the day and yet refrain from the "No thumping" specifics.
2. Good classroom management focuses on prevention of misbehavior more than on the punishment. Consequences need to be fair and consistent, but should not give the teacher too much pleasure. There should be a sense of disappointment in not having prevented the problem, rather than satisfaction in "getting the kid". 3. There is a simple rule to follow to know what not to do... Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Therefore, most of us would agree that we don't want to be embarrassed, yelled at, ignored, made an example of, or argued with. I have been guilty of sitting children in the hall, I hadn't really thought of it as making a spectacle of them until reading this. I had seen it as a means of removing them from the situation. I have kind of rethought that after reading this. 5. It was a very important point that Mr. Whitaker made about responsibility. We are responsible for our own actions and those are the only ones we have control over. However, our actions can have an enormous impact on the actions of our students. By focusing on ourselves, we focus on what we have the ability to change and don't get overwhelmed with things that are out of our control. I found these chapters as a refreshing reminder to do a self check and look at myself for the answers to some of my own classroom situations. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Teresa,I also think that consistency is the key when stating expectations and acceptable behaviors for your class. When students understand what the goals are everyday, they feel that they are are part of a community that is working together .

I agree with what you said regarding a teacher having a sense of disappointment that problems were not prevented rather than being glad she can punish a student.

Teresa, The answer to number 3 is so true. I think we do not stress this enough. Children need to learn this for themselves, as well as adults.

Yes, I agree with you, that we are r esponsible for our own actions. That is why sometimes ms. Diana and I have phone conversations about school during the evenings at home. How did today go? did I handle a certain situation right? I want to know what I am doing wrong as a teacher, and how can I improve myself. Improving myself as a teacher, on;y benefits my students. What a career to have, to work with children, can not imagine doing anything better!!!! msg

I have rule in my classroom: We treat people the way we want to be treated. When one of my students does something that hurts another students, (before they lose that point) we talk about that rule. I always ask that student "So you want that student to do that to you? Of course their answer is always "nop" I remind them not to do that to anyone, ever again!!! It is a great classroom rule. Hopefullly it will csarry over as they get older.

Teresa, I have known you a long time, and I have always admired you gentle and patient nature. You are an inspiration to us all. I do mean this. This assignmnet just allows me to give praise where it is do. I feel praise is like water to a flower, without it, a person would slowly wither away and eventual dry up and die. We all need a daily dose of water, to refresh our roots, for the next challenge facing us in the classroom, each and every day. I agree we do ALL need to do a self check to assure that we are living up to OUR standards, and not getting ssatisfied with just a getting by attitude.
Remember, as teachers we hold the power...................... Do you find this valuable? |
