Great teacher should not act as if they like all of their students, now, stop, do not take this the wrong way. (I have a difficult time expressing myself in writing and sometime even orally LOL). ?First, I have always let my students know that I love them. In Special Ed., many children (this can also be true in Reg. Ed). come from low income, abusive family situations and lack love and attention. We are not only teachers, but provide many roles for our students. Oftentimes my students will call me Mom, and I reply, "Yes son or daughter". So, we are even parents, too. I have instilled to my students, that I love and care for them. When they do something wrong, I tell them that at that time and moment I do not have to like them because of their negative behavior, but no matter what they have done, I will never stop loving them. Correcting a child, and making sure that they know they are still loved helps build the adult that we want them to be. We are not raising children, we are raising children into adults.
